Evaluation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon Pollution From the HMS Royal Oak Shipwreck and Effects on Sediment Microbial Community Structure

چکیده

Despite many shipwrecks containing oil there is a paucity of studies investigating their impact on surrounding environments. This study evaluates any potential effect the World War II shipwreck HMS Royal Oak having benthic sediments in Scapa Flow, Scotland. (Her Majesty’s Ship) sank 1939, subsequently leaked 1960s and 1990s, estimated to still hold 697 tonnes fuel oil. In this study, were analysed, over 17.5 cm depth profile, along 50–950 m cruciform transect away from shipwreck. Analysis polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) revealed low concentrations (205.91 ± 50.15 μg kg –1 dry sediment), which did not significantly differ with either distance or sediment depth. PAH well below effects-range (ERL) for OSPAR (Oslo/Paris convention Protection Marine Environment North-East Atlantic) maritime area. The average Pyrogenic Index, around , was 1.06 (±0.34), indicating PAHs pyrogenic rather than petrogenic. Moreover, analysis microbiomes no significant differences bacterial community structure shipwreck, extremely levels obligate hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (OHCB; 0.21% 0.54%). Both lines evidence suggest that sampled are currently being impacted by petrogenic show long-term previous oil-spills .

the effects of changing roughness on the flow structure in the bends

flow in natural river bends is a complex and turbulent phenomenon which affects the scour and sedimentations and causes an irregular bed topography on the bed. for the reason, the flow hydralics and the parameters which affect the flow to be studied and understand. in this study the effect of bed and wall roughness using the software fluent discussed in a sharp 90-degree flume bend with 40.3cm ...

Biological effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon derivatives.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are included in various environmental pollutants such as airborne particles and have been reported to induce a variety of toxic effects. On the other hand, PAH derivatives are generated from PAHs both through chemical reaction in the atmosphere and metabolism in the body.PAH derivatives have become known for their specific toxicities such as estrogenic/an...

pH is the primary determinant of the bacterial community structure in agricultural soils impacted by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollution

Acidification and pollution are two major threats to agricultural ecosystems; however, microbial community responses to co-existed soil acidification and pollution remain less explored. In this study, arable soils of broad pH (4.26-8.43) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) gradients (0.18-20.68 mg kg-1) were collected from vegetable farmlands. Bacterial community characteristics including...

Impact of irradiation and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon spiking on microbial populations in marine sediment for future aging and biodegradability studies.

Experiments were carried out to develop methods to generate well-characterized, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-spiked, aged but minimally altered sediments for fate, biodegradation, and bioavailability experiments. Changes in indigenous bacterial populations were monitored in mesocosms constructed of relatively clean San Diego Bay sediments, with and without exposure to gamma radiation, ...
